AI Hype vs. Tools That Actually Work: How to Tell the Difference

Every week another "revolutionary AI solution" lands in your inbox. Some of it is real. A lot of it is noise with a subscription fee. After building these tools and watching plenty of businesses buy the wrong ones, here is our field guide.

The Hype Tells

It solves everything. Real tools do one job. "An AI platform that transforms your entire business" is a red flag dressed as ambition. The useful question is never "what can it do?" It is "what will it do for the problem I actually have?"

The demo only uses their data. Slick demos on curated examples prove the demo works. Insist on seeing it run on your messy, real-world material: your voicemails, your invoices, your questions.

Nobody can name the failure mode. Every AI tool fails sometimes. A serious vendor can tell you exactly how theirs fails and what happens when it does. A hype merchant looks offended by the question.

Pricing is a mystery. "Contact us for pricing" usually means the price depends on how much money they think you have.

Urgency is the pitch. "Your competitors are already using AI" is designed to make you skip the math. Adopting the wrong tool fast is worse than adopting the right one slowly.

The Substance Tells

It attacks a named, boring problem. Missed calls. Retyped invoices. Repeated staff questions. The valuable applications of AI in small business are unglamorous, which is exactly why they work.

You can measure it. Calls rescued, hours saved, errors caught. If the benefit cannot be counted, it cannot be evaluated.

It starts small. A real solution can prove itself in weeks on a slice of the problem before you commit to anything bigger. That is not timidity. It is how confident builders behave. It is also how we work.

Someone explains it in plain English. If the person selling it cannot make it make sense without jargon, they either do not understand it or do not want you to.

The One-Question Filter

Ask any vendor: "What happens in my business, on a normal Tuesday, that this tool changes?"

A real answer sounds like: "When a call goes unanswered, the caller gets a text within seconds instead of dialing your competitor." If the answer is a paragraph of words like "leverage" and "synergy," keep your wallet closed.

We hold our own work to that filter. Watch the demos, read what things cost, and if you want the boring, measurable list of what would actually help your business, that is the Business Health Check.
