The Best Free AI Tools for Southwestern Ontario Small Businesses

You do not need a budget to start with AI. These are the free tools we actually recommend to businesses around Southwestern Ontario, what each one is good at, and the honest point where free stops being enough.

The big three assistants (all free to start)

• ChatGPT (OpenAI). The all-rounder. Brainstorming, drafts, summaries, images. If you only try one, try this.
• Claude (Anthropic). The careful writer. Best for longer documents, matching your tone, and following detailed instructions.
• Gemini (Google). Best if your business lives in Gmail, Docs, and Sheets, and good at searching the live web.

All three have free tiers that are plenty for a small business finding its feet. Pick one, use it for two weeks, and only then decide if you need anything more.

What to actually use them for first

1. Rewrite this email so it is friendly but firm. Instant, and better than staring at the screen.
2. Draft a Facebook post about [event] for a [your town] [your business type]. Sixty seconds, then make it sound like you.
3. Summarize this document in five bullet points. Paste in anything long.
4. The interview trick: ask the AI to interview you, one question at a time, about your business and where your time goes, then suggest the three tasks it could realistically take over. This one prompt is worth an hour of consulting.

Free tools beyond the chatbots

• Canva's free tier now includes AI image and design help, plenty for local social posts.
• Google Business Profile is not AI, but it is the highest-value free marketing tool in existence for local businesses, and most around here have not filled theirs in completely.

Where free stops being enough

Free assistants require you to show up and type. The next level (tools that work while you do not) is where modest money enters: automatic missed-call text-back, invoice reading, booking with reminders, a website assistant trained on your own information. Those are setup projects, not subscriptions to platforms, and they should come with flat quotes.
